Manchester
United Victorious Over Europe XI in 50th Anniversary Match
3.13.07
In
front of thousands of school children and a friendly record
crowd of 74,343, Manchester United celebrated their 50th anniversary
with a 4-3 win over Europe XI, and in the process raised £1.25
million for charity.
Led
by Cristiano Ronaldo, who delighted the crowd with his flamboyant
play, and outlasted a hack by Italian defender Marco Materazzi.
Ronaldo bent a free kick into the top corner past Valencia
keeper Santiago Canizares.
Wayne
Rooney lead the Manchester U scorers with two goals, and Wes
Brown chipped in the other goal.
The
Europe XI found themselves in a deep hole at half-time, down
4-1 with its lone goal coming from Florent Malouda. But the
second half belonged to them, with substitute El-Hadji Diouf
denting the net twice.
David
Beckham addressed the crowd at the half, praising Sir Alex
Ferguson as the "best manager in the world" and
his days at Old Trafford "the best of my career".
The
friendly game also commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the
Treaty of Rome in the spirit of camaraderie.
