GORDON BANKS, ENGLAND Chesterfield, Leicester, Stoke Fort Lauderdale Strikers (USA) 1963-72
Record-setting
keeper, his play was key to the success of British national
team. His records include 73 caps and 23 consecutive internationals
as goalkeeper for the British team. A key member of the 1966
World Cup Championship squad known for their defense, he notched
seven consecutive shut-outs, a string that was only ended
by a penalty shot in the '66 semi-final match against Portugal.
The team relied on his skill so much that his early withdraw
in the 1970 World Cup Quarterfinal lead to the loss to West
Germany.
