ALFREDO Di STEFANO, ARGENTINA, SPAIN San Lorenzo (ARG) River Plate (ARG) Millonarios Bogata (Columbia) Real Madrid (Spain) Espanol (Spain) 1947
An all-around player in every sense of the word, Di Stefano (a.k.a. "The German") may have been remembered for his career as a center-forward, but his real skill was his all-around skill level on defense, in the mid-field and on the wings. He was the complete package, and some argue a rival to Pele's title as the greatest ever. A tough up-bringing in Buenos Aires lent a determination to his game. He lead Madrid to an astounding 5 consecutive European Champions Cup finals, including a hat-trick vs. Frankfurt in 1960. Twice named the European Footballer of the Year in 1957 and 1959, he also had success as a coach of Valencia, directing them to the Cupwinners Cup in 1980.
